Snowy Owl Bentwood Box

snowyowl5In January and February of 2012 southern Illinois experienced a rare visit from a young male snowy owl.

These beautiful creatures normally inhabit Arctic regions, but during irruptive cycles, which occur every four or five years, young males migrate south to search for food.

In 2012, reports of snowy owl visitations came from as far south as southernmost Illinois and Arkansas. I was lucky enough to spot and photograph this magnificent bird as he foraged for food in a farmer’s field in southern Illinois.

I painted him on a sturdy round wooden box that measures 8 inches in diameter and 3 1/2 inches high.
